Fantasies these days revolve around going to Whole Foods on my own, with no toddler or time restrictions, to be able to read labels, sit and have lunch, maybe buy myself flowers. These are lofty goals, I know, and almost realized this weekend during a quick dash into Whole Foods to look for Tessamae’s vinaigrette (found it), Red Boat Fish Sauce (no dice), Cappello’s pasta (as if!) and coconut wraps (nadda). My lovely American friends, you are lucky to have a bounty of paleo products that us Canadians just don’t have access to, so finding Tessamae’s felt like a real coup. Aside from the Tessamae’s, I found some Nakd brand cocoa orange bars from the UK, which are my inspiration for these orange chocolate hemp bites. Toddler approved, when not rolled in hemp seeds and husband approved because they taste like “tootsie rolls”. Yum!
orange chocolate hemp bites
2 cups pitted dates
1.5 cups raw cashews
3/4 cup raisins
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1 tsp organic orange flavour (I used Simply Organic)
1/2 tsp coconut oil (if necessary)
1/2 cup hemp seeds (optional)
Using a food processor, blend dates, cashews, raisins, cocoa powder, and orange flavour until everything is combined and a thick paste forms – this step may take 3-5 minutes. If the mixture is too dry after 3 minutes, add 1/2 tsp of coconut oil. Remove chocolate paste, take 1 tsp and roll into a ball shape using hands. Put hemp seeds on a flat plate and roll each bite lightly in the chia seed to coat. Keep in refrigerator.
